Our Review:

Another immersive journey into the vaults of the late great San Francisco disco pioneer Patrick Cowley, the Dark Entries label brings us this obscure collaboration with Cowley's muse, singer, performer and sometimes lover Candida Royalle (aka Candice Vadalla). Before Royalle made a name for herself as a pornographic actress, sex educator and pioneering director of feminist erotic films, she was a performing member of The Cockette's splinter troupe The Angels of Light and performance projects Warped Floors and White Trash Boom Boom. Cowley often helped arrange and record musical pieces for her performances in his bedroom studio influenced by Tomita and Wendy Carlos. The tracks here made between 1973 and 1975 display a more atmospheric bent of shimmering pulses and moody rhythms with her vocals artfully sung in trills, chirps and even medieval incantations. The final track, the jazzy a capella "Tomato Song" is taken from an Angels of Light performance in 1973. Royalle, who passed away earlier this year, was a key figure in the feminist and queer art movements of the seventies and eighties. Featuring a 16 page booklet of candid photos and interviews, it's great to see this obscure document of musical art see the light of day.
