One hundred and fifteen contemporary musicians and composers portrayed by Roberto Masotti between 1974 and 1981, with the constant (yet always variable) presence of a small table as a stage prop that always traveled with the photographer.
“It was found and purchased on a sunny afternoon in May 1974 at a Roma camp on the outskirts of Milan, where people made their living trading scrap metal. It was first used, incidentally, as a stage prop while I was taking a portrait of Juan Hidalgo, a Fluxus artist, and again with Walter Marchetti, who, together with Hidalgo and Esther Ferrer, formed the group Zaj. From there came the idea of creating a series of portraits of musicians in which the little table would be present. Each person involved would first look through all the previously selected images, then freely decide how to act and what other objects, if any, to surround themselves with.”
Photographs by Roberto Masotti, Lelli and Masotti Archive. Texts by R. Masotti, Franco Masotti, Daniel Charles. Biographies and discography edited by Roberto Valentino.
