Another Country is the fifth full-length album by Cindy, the San Francisco-based group built around the songwriting of Karina Gill. Recorded, like all of its predecessors, in their hometown and with the same lineup as their previous release, the 2024 EP Swan Lake, the album is filled with the poetry of private vistas, overheard dramas, and shifting emotional weather. These are familiar Cindy themes, yet they continue to reveal new layers of mystery and quiet beauty with each listen. Another Country is both opaque in its intentions and precise in its presentation, offering the kind of truth that keeps listeners searching for answers just beyond reach.
“The title of this record, Another Country, refers to the James Baldwin novel of the same name. The book carries a kind of drama that resonates with me. When I look around, the obvious explanations are not enough. The haze of feelings and ideas that is supposed to explain everything does not quite do it. Baldwin moves beyond that toward deeper longings that begin to offer clarity. Cindy songs come from the X-rays my particular brain produces from what I see and experience. What you hear on this record is the result of collaboration with the members of Cindy, who transform that shadowy thing into something fully realized. Each of them, musically, is steady and fearless, and making this record together felt like a shared recognition - yes, you see what I mean.”
