Postones reveals an unexpected chapter in Vito Ricci’s work, capturing early 1980s collaborations with free jazz visionaries Rashied Ali and Byard Lancaster. Originally released in 1984 as a near-impossible-to-find cassette, these recordings document a raw intersection of improvisation, performance, and experimental composition within downtown New York’s fertile underground.
Side A features a live recording from St. Mark’s Church, where Lancaster’s lyrical lines drift between restraint and intensity, met by Ricci’s fractured percussion and synth textures. Side B moves into hypnotic, percussion-driven pieces created with Ali for dance and theater works: minimal, physical, and deeply immediate.
Long unavailable and largely unheard, Postones returns as more than an archival reissue, it’s a crucial fragment of a wider, overlooked history.
